Let Me Help You!
Copy editing is a crucial step that works to bring a piece together. It transforms a messy draft into a beautiful polished project. As a writer, I know these “messy drafts” all too well, and have never let them scare me off. I see the beauty that is buried in these rough, raw works, and it is my goal, as an editor, to expose it for everyone to see.

Editing for Legality and Inclusivity
In this project, I demonstrate my ability to identify potential legal concerns, information that requires fact checking, and lack of audience awareness. The fictional company composed this press release. Upon receiving it, I thoroughly read it to develop my understanding. Then, I reread the piece, commenting on any legal concerns, information that required verification, and overlooked in audience awareness. Additionally, I created a faux email to the company, outlining my comments and suggesting ways to improve their press release.
Throughout my process, I noted any claim or fact, and fact checked it. For this project, I was unable to verify the majority of the information, as the company was fictional. I flagged any topic specific terminology that the majority of the population may be unfamiliar with and suggested that the company define these terms to make their release more accessible. I also watched for any major claims or accusations made by the company that could potentially cause legal troubles, such as defamation.
Editing Manuscripts
In this project, I demonstrated my ability to fulfill an author’s requests, edit for consistency, and apply personalized style sheets. From this fictional author, I received a draft of a fantasy novel, as well as a list of specific requests and story related details. With this information, I thoroughly read and commented on the draft, noting spelling errors, inconsistencies, confusing writing, and leaving queries. Additionally, I created a personalized style guide to further ensure consistency throughout the piece.
From there, I rewrote the project, focusing on preserving factors specified by the author, as well as amplifying the tone, ensuring consistency, and improving the flow. I wanted to ensure the piece sounded prophetic, but not too dramatic. I paid close attention to the terms created and implemented by the author and made sure they were consistent in spelling and punctuation to improve readability. I also rearranged breaks in the paragraphs to better organize content, further improving readability and flow.
Applying Style Guides
For this project, I demonstrated my ability to develop and apply custom, individualized style sheets. I transcribed an interview with pop star Addison Rae and created a style sheet outlining her mannerisms, tone, and casual use of specific names throughout the video. Through my attention to detail, I was able to learn and understand her personal mannerisms and quirks, and create an in-depth guide to transcribing her language. This project is complimented by a mock email to Addison, pitching myself as a potential copy editor for her.
In this project, I strived to highlight Addison’s bubbly, sweet tone. I wanted to ensure that her bright personality would be depicted through her mannerisms and speaking habits.
